The Vendicari Nature Reserve is one of Sicily’s most extraordinary and fragile places. Nowhere else on the island do such diverse environments blend together so harmoniously. The Reserve is home to over 200 species of migratory birds: flamingos, herons, black-winged stilts, as well as birds of prey and small waders. The marshes – Ponterio, Longarini, Baronello – are veritable havens of tranquillity that reflect the sky and bring the landscape to life.
Coastal dunes, sandy beaches and salt-tolerant vegetation alternate with wetter, wilder areas. It is a precious and fragile ecosystem, protected by European legislation and cherished by those seeking authenticity.
HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
Tuna traps, towers and ancient landing places
The Reserve is also the guardian of an ancient heritage. Walking along the paths, you come across the remains of the Vendicari Tonnara, one of the most important on the south-eastern coast, and the Torre Sveva, a symbol of the area. These places tell the story of a seafaring and industrious Sicily, a world of nets, salt and silence.
Further on, the ruins of a Byzantine basilica and traces of salt pans bear witness to the millennia-long use of the land, which has now been returned to nature. It is a landscape that speaks of layers of history and of the harmony between humankind and the environment.
