ORTIGIA: WHAT TO SEE ON THE HISTORIC ISLAND OF SYRACUSE
An island within an island, bathed in light, steeped in history and nestled in the Mediterranean

ORTIGIA

A BAROQUE LABYRINTH OVERLOOKING THE SEA
A vibrant, elegant and sensual island
Ortigia is a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways that suddenly open out onto small squares, churches and terraces overlooking the sea. Its perfectly preserved urban fabric strikes a harmonious balance between Baroque architecture, Greek ruins and a Mediterranean atmosphere. The Cathedral, built on the site of the Temple of Athena, is one of the most striking symbols of this fusion of civilisations.
And then there are the flower-filled balconies, the markets, the stately palaces and the fountains: every step is a new discovery.
Ortigia isn’t just about beauty; it’s also full of life. By day, it comes alive with colours and scents thanks to the fish and spice markets. By night, it glows with warm lights, outdoor dining, live music and stylish bistros. Here, locals and travellers, artists and craftspeople come together in a unique blend of authenticity and sophistication.
BETWEEN MYTH AND THE MEDITERRANEAN
The Aretusa Spring and Sicily’s most beautiful sunsets
According to legend, the Aretusa Spring sprang from the tears of a nymph who had taken refuge in these waters. Today it is a symbol of the city, a freshwater spring that bubbles up just a few metres from the sea. It is right here on the Ortigia seafront that you can witness one of the island’s most beautiful sunsets: the sun sinks below the horizon, bathing the stones in shades of gold and pink.
For lovers of unspoilt nature, not far from Syracuse, the journey continues with a visit to the Plemmirio Nature Reserve. An ideal route for exploring the Val di Noto.
